AS Monaco take on Rennes after dramatic UCL draw against Zagreb.

A 3-1 defeat to defending champions Paris Saint-Germain last Friday saw Rennes slip two spots down to 10th place, one point behind ninth-placed Nice. Arnaud Kalimuendo’s goal from the spot [75' P] served only as consolation for the Red and Blacks, who had found themselves trailing by three goals as they suffered their third league defeat of the season. ‘We were dominated by a team that was able to punish us for long transitions,’ Julien Stéphan said after the loss. ‘We need to improve when we get the ball back and create more clear-cut chances,’ he added, with this weekend’s home league game against Monaco offering a chance to address last Friday’s shortcomings. While Stéphan focuses on fixing the flaws from matchday six, an unimpressive home record against Monaco also awaits rectification. The hosts have lost six of their last nine league games against Saturday’s opponents [2W, 1D, 6L], as many as in their previous 15. Furthermore, Rennes have managed just a 36.7%-win percentage against Monaco in their 50 home games in all competitions, their second-lowest ratio, only behind PSG [36.6%] among opponents they have faced at least 10 times at home. Despite these worrying stats, Stéphan’s men will fancy their chances of grabbing maximum points this weekend, buoyed by recent home form, having gone unbeaten in their last four home league games [2W, 2D, 0L]. However, failure to win this weekend would see Rennes record fewer than two wins at this stage of a Ligue 1 season for a record 12th time. Ludovic Blas, Amine Gouiri, and Kalimuendo will be in attack when Stéphan lays out the 3—4—3. Monaco are coming off a 2-2 comeback draw against Dinamo Zagreb in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night. The Red and Whites fought back from a two-goal deficit courtesy of goals from Mohammed Salisu [74’] and Denis Zakaria [90’ P]. ‘I can't say that I am happy, but after being behind by two goals, I must say that I am satisfied to get a draw,’ Adi Hütter said, after seeing his team fail to record a win for the first time in over a month. Prior to Wednesday’s clash, Monaco had recorded four straight victories in all competitions, including a 2-1 league victory against Montpellier last weekend, one that propelled them [WDWWW} to second place, while level on points with table-topping PSG. They make the trip to Rennes this weekend, aiming to return with a win. A 4—2—2 is expected, with Folarin Balogun and Breel Embolo in attack. Stade Rennais F.C. vs. AS Monaco FC kicks off at 20:00 [GMT+1] on Saturday, October 5, at Roazhon Park.

Toulouse seeking win in trip to Lille.

LOSC Lille vs. Toulouse FC kicks off at 18:00 [GMT+1] on Saturday, October 5, at Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Bruno Génésio's men secured back-to-back victories, including a convincing 3-0 win against Le Havre last weekend, before achieving a historic 1-0 upset victory against defending Champions Real Madrid in the Champions League in midweek. As Génésio had predicted, Lille 'gained everything' by taking all three points on Wednesday, ending Madrid's 36-match unbeaten streak. A Jonathan David goal from the spot [45+2’ P.] just before halftime and a heroic performance from goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, who made crucial saves in the latter stages, were enough to secure Lille’s first win of the 2024-2025 UCL campaign. ‘We prepared well for the match, and the players responded perfectly to what we expected of them with a very good first half and a second with a lot of solidarity and talent in goal,’ Génésio said after the win. Back to domestic action, where they welcome Toulouse for this weekend’s matchday seven Ligue 1 encounter, the Mastiffs will look to continue their impressive run as they aim to secure a third consecutive victory in all competitions. Lille have a dominant record against Toulouse on home turf, winning 21 out of 34 home league games [21W, 9D, 4L]. Furthermore, the hosts have scored in each of their last 16 home games against Toulouse in Ligue 1 (26 goals scored in total), their longest current streak against the same opponent in the top flight. However, a recent run of poor form at home will cast doubts on their abilities to secure three points this weekend, having won just one of their last five home league games [1W, 2D, 2L]. Lille [WLLDW] sit in fifth place, one point behind fourth-placed Reims, heading into Saturday’s game. Génésio could deploy a 4—2—3—1, with Jonathan David in attack. Toulouse [DLWLL] find themselves in 15th place following a heartbreaking 2-1 loss against Lyon last weekend. A stoppage-time goal from Malick Fofana [90+5’] dealt a huge blow to Les Violets after Yann Gboho’s early opener [14’] was canceled out by Rasmus Nicolaisen’s own goal [28’ O.G.], handing them back-to-back league losses. The equalizing goal hurt us psychologically, Carles Martinez Novell said on Nicolaisen’s own goal. We wanted to look forward to winning, but we exposed ourselves, and we regret it,’ he added. They will now make the trip to Lille, hoping to return with at least a point. However, Toulouse have lost 13 of their last 20 away league games [2W, 5D, 13L] in the Haurts-de-France region. A 3—4—2—1 could be seen against Lille, with Frank Magri in attack.

Marseille back against newly promoted Angers after 'deserved' defeat.

After a ‘deserved’ defeat to Strasbourg last time out, OM are back against newly promoted Angers, hoping to return to winning ways. Olympique Marseille vs. SCO Angers kicks off at 19:45 [GMT+1] on Friday, October 4, at Stade Vélodrome. Olympique Marseille are coming off the back of a 1-0 loss to Strasbourg [DWWWL], a loss that brought an end to OM’s three-game winning run. 'We played a lot of man against man, one versus one; we lost 80% of these duels, so we deserved to lose the match.' Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi said. 'We lost too many duels, even aerial duels. It’s a deserved defeat,’ he added after his side lost more ground to the top two. In 3rd place with 13 points in total, Marseille trail 2nd place Monaco by 3 points. All hands will be on deck as Marseille looks to bounce back to winning ways this Friday in a bid to remain within touching distance of the top two. Newcomers Angers are next in line for Marseille before a trip to Montpellier after the international break. While the Olympians have won only one [1W, 2D, 1L] of their four games against newly promoted sides such as Friday’s visitors, Marseille could pick up four wins in a row over Angers for the first time in club history. The home side have won their last three games against Angers in all competitions. In addition, Marseille would be riding on an impeccable home record, having lost only once at home in the current calendar year [5W, 5D, 1L]. A 4—2—3—1 with Elye Wahi in attack may be seen from De Zerbi. Just like Friday’s opponents, Angers are also coming off the back of defeat. The visitors lost 3-1 to Reims in front of their own crowd after a late goal from Zinedine Ferhat [84’] failed to inspire any form of a comeback. Having earned only 2 points, the newcomers are seated at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table, two points shy of the relegation playoff spot. At the opposing end of the table, when compared to Marseille, Angers will be looking to lift themselves out of the bottom two at the end of Friday’s fixture. However, with settling to life in the top flight more difficult than expected, Angers could fail to win their first seven games of a season in the top flight for the first time since 1965/66. A 4—2—3—1 with Esteban Lepaul in attack is expected. As many as five, including Bamba Dieng, are ruled out of this weekend’s clash.

Strasbourg take on Marseille, hoping to end three-game winless run.

After picking up a point in a six-goal thriller against Lille, Le Racing take on the Olympians, hoping to put an end to a three-game winless run. RC Strasbourg vs. Marseille kicks off at 19:45 [GMT+1] on Sunday, September 29, at Stade de la Meinau. Strasbourg will be coming off successive draws after last weekend’s 3-3 draw against LOSC Lille. The precious point helped Le Racing move into 10th place, having picked up 6 points [1W, 3D, 1L] after Match Week 5. The home side will be looking to put an end to a three-game winless run when they face Marseille this weekend [DWLDD]. However, Strasbourg have not won any of their last 17 matches against Marseille in Ligue 1 [0W, 9D, 8L]. Failure to pick up a win here would see them record their longest such streak against the same opponent in the topflight [17 also against Monaco in 1979-1992]. Victory here would not only see the home side win their 1000th home match in all competitions but would also see Strasbourg climb a few spots up the table. A 4—1—4—1 with Emanuel Emegha in attack may be seen once again for Sunday’s clash against Marseille. Liam Rosenior will be without as many six players, including Thomas Delaine and Milos Lukovic. Second-placed Marseille will be looking to go level on points with table-topping PSG when they make the trip to Strasbourg. Despite playing almost the entire length of the game against Lyon with ten men after Leonardo Balerdi was shown the red card in the 5th minute, Marseille rallied on to a stoppage-time 3-2 win last weekend. OM will be looking to pick up back-to-back victories at the weekend against Strasbourg. A fine record on the road this season leaves the visitors with a win in their first three away matches of a season for the second time in their Ligue 1 history, after 2012/13 when they lost their fourth away match. Victory here would leave OM with four such victories for the first time ever. ‘The match against Strasbourg looks even more difficult than the one against Lyon. We have to be at our best, mentally, physically, and tactically,’ Roberto De Zerbi said ahead of the weekend’s clash. ‘A strong, attacking, young team, with good players and a clear identity. They’ve played some beautiful matches. We’ll have to know how to suffer in an atmosphere that promises to be very hot. Strasbourg runs more than Lyon, puts in more intensity,’ he added. A 4—2—3—1 with Elye Wahi in attack may be seen from Marseille.

Lyon in search of away win as Toulouse host Les Gones.

Toulouse FC vs. Olympique Lyonnais kicks off at 14:00 [GMT+1] on Sunday, September 29, at Stadium de Toulouse. Toulouse have experienced a mixed start to their 2024-2025 Ligue 1 campaign, which began with back-to-back draws in their opening two games. A win sandwiched between two losses [DDLWL] further reflects the team's inconsistency, with the latest result being a 2-0 defeat to Brest last weekend. After conceding an early goal, Toulouse had a chance to equalise from the spot, but Zakaria Aboukhlal's miss proved costly, as Les Violets conceded a second goal in stoppage time, resulting in their second league defeat in three games. ‘I think we played enough, we generated enough, we did enough things to win the game, but of course, football is if you don’t score, you cannot win games,’ Carles Martínez Novell said after the game. ‘We have to keep working and try to be better next week,’ he added, shifting focus to this Sunday’s league encounter with Lyon at the Stadium de Toulouse. Currently 13th in the league standings, Les Violets will look to bounce back with a win against 14th-placed Lyon, aiming to extend the narrow point gap over this weekend’s opponent. However, the hosts have not won any of their last 15 Ligue 1 games against Lyon, their second-longest winless run against a single opponent in the topflight after Marseille [21]. Having secured a 2-0 win over Le Havre in their last home league game, Novell’s men could record back-to-back clean sheets at home in the Ligue 1 for the first time since August 2019 [2]. A 3—4—2—1 could be seen this weekend, with Yann Gboho in attack. Lyon got off to a flying start in their Europa League campaign following a 2-0 victory over Olympiacos in midweek. Goals from Rayan Cherki [65’] and substitute Saïd Benrahma [71’] were all it took to secure three points in Pierre Sage’s first European game in charge. ‘What did we learn from Sunday? We knew it was a big disappointment because when you see the match we played and all the chances we created, we should never have lost, so we were really fired up for this match,’ Cherki reflected after contributing to the win while recalling last weekend’s disappointing 3-2 loss to Marseille in the league. Lyon fell short against 10-man Marseille, despite having a numerical advantage for almost the entire game following Leonardo Balerdi’s 5th-minute red card. Les Gones [LLWDL] will now look to build on their success on the European front, aiming to overturn their underwhelming league performance with a win when they travel to Toulouse this weekend. A 3—5—2 is expected with Alexandre Lacazette and Gift Orban in attack.

Monaco keen to extend season-long unbeaten run with Montpellier's visit.

Monaco will aim to maintain their unbeaten start to the Ligue 1 season when they host Montpellier this weekend. Monaco vs. Montpellier kicks off at 20:00 [GMT+1] on Saturday, September 28 at Stade Louis II. Currently tied on 13 points with Marseille and PSG, Monaco sits third in the table after five games. Their recent 3-1 win against Le Havre, where Jordan Teze [9'] opened the scoring before Ben Seghir [66'] and Folarin Balogun [70'] netted second-half goals, extended their strong start to the season. Monaco’s tally of 13 points is their best after five games since their title-winning campaign in 2016-17. Monaco’s recent record against Montpellier is also encouraging. However, the last time Monaco recorded three consecutive clean sheet wins against Montpellier was between November 1996 and October 1998, when they won four. As Monaco looks to extend their fine form, their current home record is a major advantage. They have won six of their last seven home games in Ligue 1 [6W, 1D, 0L], a stark contrast to their previous six home matches in which they failed to win any [0W, 3D, 3L]. Manager Adi Hütter is likely to stick with a 4—4—2 formation for this match, with George Ilenikhena partnering Folarin Balogun up front. Monaco will, however, miss Edan Diop, who is sidelined with a foot injury. On the other hand, Montpellier will be looking to build on their maiden win of the season after a difficult start. A brace from Akor Adams [65', 75'] in their 2-0 victory over Auxerre gave Montpellier a much-needed maiden victory, halting a run of three consecutive defeats that had left them languishing at the bottom of the table. Now 15th with four points, manager Michel Der Zakarian will be hoping his side can carry that momentum into this weekend’s fixture against Monaco. Defensive frailties have been a major issue for Montpellier this season, as they have conceded 15 goals in their first five games, their worst defensive start in Ligue 1 at this stage since 1998-99, when they conceded 11 goals. Their away form also leaves much to ponder on, having failed to win any of their last three Ligue 1 away games [0W, 1D, 2L], a huge dip in form on the road when compared to their previous run of four wins in five [4W, 1D, 0L]. However, Der Zakarian will look to the past for inspiration, as he was in charge when Montpellier secured a stunning 4-0 win at Monaco in April 2023. Fresh off his brace against Auxerre, Adams is expected to start in attack in a 4—2—3—1 formation. Issiaga Sylla is ruled out due to a thigh injury, and Théo Sainte-Luce is also sidelined.
